Know what you are doing?

A residual current circuit breaker is a form of double-pole on/off switch that auto-matically cuts out (switches itself off) when there is a leakage of electric current to earth from a circuit or from an appliance plugged into the mains. There are two types in use. The residual current circuit breaker (RCCB), formerly called a current-operated ELCB, is now the only type fitted in new installations. The only other type is the voltage-opreated ELCB, which is now obsolete but still found on older systems. If you install a new consumer unit fitted with an RCCB you simply have it connected to the mains by the electricity board, using the appropiate size and type of meter leads and the correct earth conductor. The RCCB fitted to a consumer unit is made in various current ratings up to 100amps and the trip ratings are from 30mA upwards. As the RCCB will trip whenever a live/earth fault occurs, it is wise to choose one having a trip current rating of 100mA.

Earth bonding is a must in all homes.
